What’s in a Name?
A lot actually! When most people hear the name Acts 29, they grab their Bibles and open up to the book of Acts expecting to find an exciting story about God’s work in chapter 29. Most are surprised when they find that Acts chapter 29 doesn’t exist in print. If people want to know what Acts 29 is all about they would have to pack their bags and travel to the heart of Detroit to a tiny two square mile city called Hamtramck. Here in the city Acts 29 exists not in print, but instead it exists in the real faces and lives of those of us that strive to live out the calling and commission of Jesus to be his hands and his feet to the people around us.
Acts 29’s Ministry Focus
Presently we are focusing on a four square mile area recognized as Detroit’s second empowerment community- east of the Cass Corridor. This area includes two square miles presently a part of Detroit proper, and two square miles, which presently make up the city of Hamtramck. The total population of this four square mile area is 65,000. The city of Hamtramck is home to five major people groups: African American, Polish, Arab, Bosnian and Asian Indians (from Bangladesh). The two square miles if Detroit that are within our target area for ministry is 80% African American. This empowerment community represents some of the lowest standard marks in the nation in terms of family structure, economics, education, employment development, and housing. The Christain faith is proclaimed by some, but not lived out in any way. More prevalent is the Islamic faith, which is proclaimed by nearly 60% of the population of Hamtramck.
